Buying guide- Best laptop for blender

Processor:

CPU is always an essential part of a laptop or computer especially if you want a laptop for blender as it consumes high power from your processor, so there is no way you can get a cheaper or lower range of CPU.

While looking out for any type of laptop we have 2 brands Intel and AMD, users are always confused about which processor brand is doing good but no worries I am here to explain to you in detail about both CPUs.

The Intel CPU mostly performs well in the single-core whereas AMD Ryzen is faster in multi-core performance, as result, Intel is slightly better for gaming purposes whereas AMD is better at productive work.

Therefore I suggest AMD Ryzen for heavy tasks, as the multi-core performance counts a lot for running software such as blender on the laptop.

Yet it does not mean that Intel does not produce productive CPUs they do have highly efficient processors but they are a little more pricey than AMD, Ryzen series of AMD is cheaper than Intel which also produces better results.

However, there are good options from Intel as well, push to prefer a laptop with a minimum of 6 cores and 12 threads or even above.

Moreover choosing a processor always depends on which version of blender you are using on your system.

At this point, I would suggest the latest Intel processor, for a low-budget Ryzen 5 series, or 11th gen intel i5 is a decent option, whereas if you work on heavy 3D modeling, animation, and game development you should have at least 8 cores and 16 threads CPU.

As while working on these projects, the CPU uses its potential to navigate calculations on 3D designs, simulation and also rendering to some extent uses CPU, moreover with cores you should have a good speed minimum 3.5Ghz speed is required and anything above this is always recommended.

Graphics card:

Before discussing in depth about the GPU there are many searches online either a dedicated GPU needed for a blender laptop, and this is very tricky as GPUs do play a big role in heavy tasks so yes you need a graphics card for a blender.

Especially for 3D work and rendering, it manages to help your CPU, rendering puts a lot of pressure on your machine so if you do very composite rendering then try to choose RTX 30 series GPU specially RTX 3060, 3070, or 3080.

For basic rendering RTX 3050 is fine or even GTX 1660ti and 1650ti will do the job, still as I said for the safer side you need strong hardware.

Also, there are a few AMD options as well but Blender software works better with Nvidia GPUs than AMD and another thing with AMD graphics is short of availability.

Just a last suggestion if you work on heavy tasks such as game development and animation then an 8GB video chip size gives a smooth experience, also the GPU requires in-game testing at regular intervals.

Ram:

If you are an entry-level or let’s say a student who is just in the learning stage then 8GB DDR4 ram is a decent option but remember if you have to do a lot of rendering work then 16GB is ideal and recommended.

Also for professional blender users minimum, I suggest getting 16GB as you may have to do a lot of multitasking, however higher is always better I guess 16GB is still enough for a blender but make sure your machine has an upgradeable option up to 32GB Ram.

An additional tip is to try to choose a laptop that has dual channel memory support so you can use both as it helps to enhance performance which automatically increases the efficiency of your work.

Storage:

There is no way you should choose a laptop that has HDD, it will be the biggest error, as you need a machine that is faster so you can work blissfully.

Blender is already demanding software so you must include SSD in your checklist while searching good laptop for a blender, bender approximately takes about 500MB of space, and file space can vary depending on the intensity of your work.

The 512GB SSD should be enough until and unless you have to store high-volume files, data, software, games, and videos, in this case, a 1TB SSD laptop is needed.

However, most of the laptops do come with options to upgrade the storage so it is not a big issue upgrading cost you around 50-100$ so if you are ready to invest later then 512GB SSD is good otherwise as I said 1TB is excellent.

Screen size and quality:

For work such as animation, 3D images, or videos you need a higher screen so you do not have to concentrate a lot.

If you go with a 17-inch laptop for a blender then the weight of the machine will be bulky, and 13-inch laptops are not very ideal for your work especially for animators so in this case, a 14 to 15” screen is good as these laptops can also ensure portability.

Now do not worry about the quality of the screen as most probably you get Full HD resolution in all the laptops, but make sure to check also if you like to run videos or play games then refresh rate also matters.

In this case, at least a 120hz panel screen is best suited for gaming purposes anything higher than 120hz will give you buttery smooth visuals, additionally for designing games you should have a better refresh rate as this allow you to test the games in real-time.

If your work demands accurate colors the laptop must have 100% Srgb color gamut support, otherwise it is not a big issue for a basic level of work, but note that the 100% color gamut laptops are a bit pricy you may have to spend above 1000 dollars.

Thermal management must be top quality:

This is the most important factor when choosing a laptop for a blender especially if you have to run complex rendering works, as these tasks intend to heat the machine a lot which can harm the longevity of the machine.

So there is no room for compromise on the heating system, there are a few brands that always make laptops with good cooling technology, brands such as Acer you have nitro, and predator variants, and other brands like from Lenovo legion series, Asus Zephyrus, or Strix models are great laptops.

Operating system:

Blender is one 3D software that also works on Macbook, yet a large number of users do prefer windows over Mac, simple reason is it’s quite a versatile platform and you get multiple options to use other 3D designing applications.

Another reason why windows are better than Mac for a blender is that rendering is a heavy process that uses dedicated GPU a lot, and Mac laptop comes with integrated GPU that can put a lot of load on your CPU to deliver performance as result in your machine lags and becomes slow.

However, technology has evolved over the years and you can also use the Mac operating system on windows as well so it’s not a big concern, and always better to go with windows for blender.
